Uttar Pradesh to Develop Multiple Solar Cities: CM Yogi Adityanath

Mar 17, 2025

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced plans to develop solar cities across all municipal corporations in the state as part of its ongoing green energy initiatives. Speaking at the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) conference in Gorakhpur, the CM emphasized the state's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.

Reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, Adityanath highlighted the state’s transition towards energy-efficient infrastructure. Notably, 17 lakh halogen streetlights have been replaced with LED alternatives, resulting in energy savings worth INR 1,000 crore.

In line with sustainable development, the government has also banned single-use plastics and is actively promoting eco-friendly alternatives. A Lakhimpur-based facility is currently producing biodegradable products from banana fibre, further supporting the state’s environmental conservation efforts. Additionally, over 210 crore trees have been planted in the past eight years, increasing forest cover despite industrial expansion.

The Chief Minister announced that Ayodhya has already been developed as Uttar Pradesh’s first solar city, with similar projects underway in Bundelkhand. These initiatives aim to enhance renewable energy adoption and create self-sustaining urban energy models.

Apart from solar energy, the UP government is actively promoting compressed biogas (CBG) and ethanol production from agricultural waste. A bio-CNG plant is already operational in Gorakhpur, with further plans to scale up renewable fuel production.

With these efforts, Uttar Pradesh is set to emerge as a leader in clean energy adoption, aligning with India’s broader sustainability goals and paving the way for eco-friendly urban development.
