U.S. Sets New Records in Clean Energy Transition in 2024

Mar 15, 2025

The United States achieved historic milestones in its energy transition in 2024, with solar power adding a record 64 TWh of electricity generation. For the first time, wind and solar together accounted for 17% of the country’s total electricity generation, surpassing coal, which fell to a record low of just 15%.

This marks a major shift in the U.S. energy landscape, as clean energy outpaced coal for the first time in history. Additionally, 24 states have now individually reached this milestone, with Illinois being the latest to transition toward a renewable-dominated grid.

These trends highlight the accelerating shift toward sustainable power sources, driven by declining costs, supportive policies, and increasing demand for low-carbon electricity. The momentum is expected to continue, further reducing reliance on fossil fuels and strengthening the U.S. clean energy transition.
