Tata Power Renewable Arm Wins 120 MWh Battery Storage Project from NHPC

Jul 19, 2025

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power Company, has secured its first-ever Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) from NHPC Limited for a 30 MW / 120 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kerala. This project, awarded through a competitive bidding process conducted for Kerala State Electricity Board Limited, will be located at a 220 kV substation in Kerala and is set for commissioning within 15 months. It will operate under a 12-year agreement.

This initiative forms part of NHPC’s broader plan to establish 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone BESS in Kerala, supported by the central government’s Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme. The battery storage system will play a crucial role in managing peak power demand, enhancing grid stability, and improving the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

This is not TPREL’s first foray into energy storage. The company is also operating a solar-plus-storage project in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, which features a 100 MW solar PV plant coupled with a 120 MWh utility-scale BESS.

This win marks a major milestone for Tata Power in its journey to strengthen its presence in India’s growing battery storage sector.
