TATA Power Gets MERC Nod for 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System in Mumbai

Apr 08, 2025

TATA Power has secured approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to develop a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai over the next two years. This marks a significant step in enhancing the city’s energy resilience and grid flexibility. The project is part of TATA Power’s broader commitment to modernizing its infrastructure with smart, sustainable energy solutions.

A key highlight of the upcoming BESS is its "black start" capability, allowing it to help quickly restore power during outages without relying on the main grid. This feature significantly improves emergency preparedness and ensures faster recovery during grid failures.

The entire 100 MW capacity will be distributed across 10 strategically selected locations in Mumbai, ensuring balanced load management and optimized response during peak demand or outages. These sites will be centrally monitored and managed from TATA Power’s Power System Control Center (PSCC), enabling real-time oversight and control.

Looking ahead, TATA Power also plans to integrate the BESS with a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) to further improve grid efficiency, coordination, and flexibility—laying the groundwork for a smarter, more sustainable energy network in the city.
