Sunsure & Enerica Win NVVN’s 250 MW/1000 MWh Battery Storage Tender
Jul 28, 2025
NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, has successfully awarded its first major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) tender—a 250 MW/1000 MWh project launched in February 2025. This tender is one of India's earliest to include charging power responsibility under the bidder’s scope and pricing quoted in INR per kWh, reflecting a shift towards performance-linked contracts.
Sunsure Energy Private Limited and Enerica Infra 3 Private Limited (EnerGrid) have emerged as the winners. Sunsure secured 125 MW/500 MWh at a competitive tariff of Rs6.64/kWh, while Enerica won the remaining 125 MW/500 MWh at Rs6.65/kWh.
Both developers will benefit from Viability Gap Funding (VGF), with support capped at Rs27 lakh per MWh or up to 30% of capital cost. This mechanism aims to make the projects financially viable and attract private investment in India’s nascent BESS sector.
The project is a milestone in India’s transition to firm, dispatchable renewable energy, helping address intermittency challenges from solar and wind power. It also aligns with the government’s vision to scale up energy storage infrastructure, critical for achieving net-zero emissions and grid reliability in a renewables-dominated future.
