ReNew Champions Ground-Level Capacity Building in Environmental & Social Governance

Apr 16, 2025

While renewable energy projects are generally seen as environmentally friendly, they can still raise concerns about land use, biodiversity, and community impact. In India, solar and wind projects don't legally require environmental clearance. However, due to investor pressure—especially from standards like IFC’s Performance Standards—many renewable companies are now adopting environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA) and due diligence (ESDD) practices.

ReNew, a leader in India’s renewable energy sector, is setting a strong example. Recognizing the need for a bottom-up approach, ReNew partnered with Environmental Management Centre Pvt Ltd (EMC) to conduct a two-day capacity-building workshop in Delhi. The goal was to train both corporate and site-level Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) teams.

The workshop covered crucial topics like environmental regulations, biodiversity laws, and social safeguards for land and indigenous communities. Participants also learned practical tools such as GIS mapping, biodiversity screening, and noise/shadow modelling. The training emphasized the importance of life cycle thinking and circular economy principles—like reducing waste, reusing resources, and preparing assets for climate risks.

This initiative reflects ReNew’s long-term vision for sustainability and shows how proactive training can drive stronger environmental and social performance across the renewable energy industry.
