REAR Requests MNRE for Regulations on Sale and Identification of B Grade Solar Modules
May 14, 2025
The Renewable Energy Association of Rajasthan (REAR) has formally urged the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to establish regulations and guidelines for the sale and identification of B Grade solar modules. In an official letter, REAR highlighted the growing concern over the influx of substandard B and C Grade solar panels into the market, often lacking proper labeling, warranties, or traceability. This issue is significantly affecting consumer trust, the quality of rooftop solar installations, and the competitive landscape for genuine EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) players.
Most critically, REAR stressed that the use of these low-quality modules jeopardizes India’s ambitious solar generation target of 300 GW by 2030. Although these panels contribute to installed capacity, their subpar performance risks undermining the credibility of the nation’s clean energy goals.
REAR’s recommendations to the MNRE include clear labeling or stamping of B Grade panels, restricting their use in net metering systems, establishing a transparent mechanism for their disposal or regulated resale, and protecting consumers by ensuring higher quality in the solar sector. These steps are deemed essential to safeguard the growth and integrity of India’s solar energy market.
