Public Sector Push: 11.28 GW of Renewable Energy Projects Under Construction by CPSUs
Mar 03, 2025
India’s Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) are making significant strides in renewable energy development, with 11,289.32 MW of RE projects currently under construction, according to the Central Electricity Authority's (CEA) Quarterly Report (December 2024) on under-construction renewable energy projects.
Key Highlights from CPSU RE Expansion:
- NTPC Leads the Charge: With 5,417.32 MW under development—including 4,137.32 MW solar, 380 MW wind, and 900 MW hybrid—NTPC is the largest contributor among CPSUs.
- SJVN’s Strong Presence: The company is developing 3,848 MW, primarily in solar (3,548 MW) and wind (300 MW).
- NHPC’s Solar Investment: The hydropower giant is actively investing in solar, with 1,790 MW under construction.
- Other CPSUs: DVC has 234 MW of solar projects under construction, while THDC currently has no reported capacity under development.
Breakdown of CPSU Under-Construction RE Projects:
- Solar Projects: 9,709.32 MW (86% of total capacity)
- Wind Projects: 680 MW
- Hybrid Projects: 900 MW
With India targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, the growing involvement of CPSUs in the renewable sector is crucial. NTPC, SJVN, and NHPC are spearheading efforts to accelerate the clean energy transition, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainability and energy security.
