Pooling Substation in IPP Solar Project

Mar 08, 2025

A pooling substation plays a critical role in an Independent Power Producer (IPP) ground-mounted solar project, facilitating voltage step-up, power flow management, and grid compliance. Below are the key technical aspects of the substation design and operation:

1. Electrical Configuration
  • Inverter Output: Solar inverters generate AC voltage at standard levels.
  • Step-Up Transformer: Converts inverter output to 11kV, 22kV, or 33kV, depending on grid requirements.
  • Switchgear & Protection: Equipped with circuit breakers, isolators, CT/PT (Current/Voltage Transformers), and relay panels for system protection.
2. Substation Equipment
  • Power Transformer: Step-up transformers (33kV/11kV, 5MVA, or 10MVA) based on project capacity.
  • HT & LT Panels: Medium-voltage switchgear (GIS/AIS), VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breakers) for fault isolation.
  • SCADA System: Enables real-time monitoring and remote control of the substation.
3. Protection System
  • Overcurrent & Earth Fault Relays: Detect and mitigate electrical faults.
  • Lightning Arrestors & Surge Protection: Prevent voltage surges from damaging equipment.
  • Differential Protection: Ensures transformer safety by detecting internal faults.
4. Civil & Structural Considerations
  • Switchyard Design:
    • GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) for compact spaces.
    • AIS (Air Insulated Switchgear) for open areas.
  • Earthing & Grounding: Copper-bonded earthing electrodes enhance safety and system reliability.
  • Cable Trenching & Routing: Uses HDPE/XLPE insulated cables to minimize power losses and ensure durability.
5. Grid Compliance & Integration
  • Grid Synchronization Panel: Ensures stable power injection into the grid.
  • Anti-Islanding Protection: Prevents back-feeding into the grid during outages, ensuring safety.
  • Remote Monitoring via SCADA: Tracks key parameters like power generation, voltage, frequency, and system faults.

This advanced substation design ensures efficient, safe, and compliant integration of renewable energy into the grid, enhancing the reliability and performance of the POWERTRAC Group’s solar power project.
