Jul 28, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth over Rs4,800 crore in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, spanning clean energy, transport, and connectivity sectors. A key highlight was the foundation laying of the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for evacuating electricity from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (2x1,000 MW). With an investment of Rs550 crore, this 400 kV double-circuit transmission line to Thoothukudi-II GIS substation aims to strengthen the national grid and ensure reliable power supply across Tamil Nadu and other states.
Modi emphasized the role of such infrastructure in meeting India's clean energy and environmental targets while supporting industrial and domestic consumers. He also praised Tamil Nadu’s proactive participation in the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with around 1 lakh applications received and over 40,000 rooftop solar installations already completed—creating clean energy and green jobs.
Additionally, the Prime Minister dedicated two major road infrastructure projects worth Rs2,500 crore, aimed at enhancing connectivity between key economic zones and Chennai. Highlighting the importance of sustained infrastructure and energy investments, Modi reiterated their role in driving Tamil Nadu’s long-term development.
He also spoke on the India–UK Free Trade Agreement, noting that 99% of Indian products will now be tax-free in the UK. This development is expected to boost demand for Indian goods, benefitting Tamil Nadu’s MSMEs, youth, and startups, especially in sectors like manufacturing, fisheries, and research.
