NHPC Achieves Major Milestone in Teesta-VI Hydroelectric Project Tunnel Excavation
Apr 23, 2025
A significant breakthrough was achieved in the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) excavation at the 500 MW Teesta-VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim. On April 22, 2025, NHPC successfully completed the HRT heading excavation for Face 1B and Face 2B, spanning a total length of 3,861 meters. This milestone marks a crucial advancement in the development of one of India’s key hydropower projects.
The event was witnessed by Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects), NHPC, and Shri Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), NHPC. Their presence highlighted the importance of this achievement in maintaining project timelines and demonstrating technical efficiency in challenging Himalayan terrain.
The Head Race Tunnel plays a vital role in channeling water to the turbines and is central to the project’s ability to generate 500 MW of clean, renewable hydroelectric energy. Teesta-VI is part of India's broader push to expand its renewable energy capacity while leveraging the country’s hydro potential, especially in the northeastern region.
This successful breakthrough not only brings NHPC a step closer to project completion but also underscores the engineering capabilities and sustained efforts driving India’s clean energy infrastructure forward.
