MPERC Allows ACME Solar to Increase DC Capacity Within Regulatory Limits

Apr 02, 2025

The Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC) has permitted ACME Solar Energy (MP) to enhance the direct current (DC) capacity of its 25 MW solar project, provided it remains within the contracted alternating current (AC) capacity as per its power purchase agreement (PPA).

Key Regulatory Conditions:
  • The AC capacity at the interconnection point must not exceed the contracted value.
  • Regulatory clearances must be obtained before implementation.
  • Grid compliance and technical requirements must be met.
Case Background:
  • ACME Solar argued that advancements in solar technology allow for higher efficiency and energy output without altering the AC capacity, leading to better project efficiency and financial viability.
  • Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company (MPPMCL) opposed the move, citing concerns over:
    • Energy scheduling & grid management
    • Regulatory inconsistencies and potential future PPA modifications
    • No provision for repowering in the PPA
  • MPERC acknowledged the industry trend of DC augmentation while emphasizing adherence to contractual obligations and grid stability.
Commission’s Ruling:
  • ACME Solar can proceed with DC augmentation, but must not exceed the contracted AC capacity at the interconnection point.
  • MPPMCL will oversee the augmentation process to prevent any deviations in procurement terms.
  • Both parties must coordinate to ensure grid stability and compliance with regulatory guidelines.
Policy Context:

The Madhya Pradesh Renewable Energy Policy 2025 targets 50% renewable energy consumption by 2030, aligning with India’s broader clean energy goals. The ruling reflects regulatory flexibility while maintaining grid reliability and contract integrity.
