MoP's Advisory on Energy Storage in Rooftop Solar: A Game Changer for PM Surya Ghar Yojana

Feb 20, 2025

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has recommended integrating two-hour energy storage with rooftop solar projects under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, a move that could significantly enhance grid stability and consumer benefits. If implemented, the initiative could transform 1 crore homes, adding 50 GW of solar capacity, which would contribute over 10% of India’s renewable energy target for 2030.

Key Benefits of Solar + Storage Integration
  • Lower Electricity Bills: Consumers can use stored solar energy during peak Time-of-Day (ToD) tariffs, reducing dependence on costly grid power.
  • Reduced Grid Strain: Excess solar injection during peak sunshine hours can be controlled, preventing grid instability.
  • Uninterrupted Power Supply: Stored solar energy ensures reliable electricity even during power outages.

Urban consumers with 24x7 power access might be hesitant due to concerns over battery replacement costs, which occur every 5-10 years.

Call for Additional Subsidies

To accelerate adoption, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) should introduce additional subsidies for hybrid rooftop solar systems (solar + storage) under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. This financial support would make energy storage more accessible, ensuring long-term benefits for both consumers and the grid.
