MoEFCC Amends Battery Waste Management Rules, 2025 to Strengthen EPR Compliance
Mar 01, 2025
The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has introduced amendments to the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, effective February 24, 2025. These updates aim to enhance Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance, traceability, and sustainable battery waste management.
Key Amendments:
- Barcode/QR Code for EPR Compliance: Producers must print an EPR registration barcode or QR code on batteries, battery packs, or equipment containing batteries.
- EPR Registration Number: To be printed on product brochures, ensuring transparency.
- Relaxation in Chemical Symbol Marking: Batteries with less than or equal to 0.002 percent CD or less than or equal to 0.004% Lead are exempt from ‘Cd’ or ‘Pb’ markings.
- Centralized Online Portal: The CPCB will maintain and update a quarterly list of registered producers for better monitoring.
These regulatory enhancements reinforce India’s commitment to circular economy principles while streamlining battery waste management in line with global best practices.
