Japan Backs Ultra-Thin Perovskite Solar Panels to Meet Renewable Targets, Challenge China

Jul 21, 2025

Japan is investing significantly in ultra-thin, flexible perovskite solar panels as a strategic move to advance its renewable energy ambitions and reduce reliance on China’s solar supply chain. Unlike traditional silicon-based solar panels, perovskite panels are lightweight, adaptable, and can be installed on irregular surfaces—making them ideal for Japan's mountainous terrain and space constraints.

A major advantage for Japan lies in the material composition: perovskite panels require iodine, of which Japan is the world’s second-largest producer after Chile. This gives the country a unique supply chain edge and the potential to become a key player in next-generation solar technology.

By promoting domestic development of this promising technology, Japan aims not only to improve its energy security and meet decarbonization goals but also to reclaim industrial competitiveness in the global solar market, which is currently dominated by China.
