Indian Railways Targets Net-Zero by 2030 with 100% Electrification

At the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Bhopal. Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw reaffirmed Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainability:
- 100% Electrification by FY 2025-26
- Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030
With 97% of broad gauge routes already electrified, the focus now shifts to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and green mobility.
Key Steps in Renewable Energy
- Cheapest Solar Power: Rs2.15/kWh PPA for 170 MW with Madhya Pradesh Government
- Renewable Energy Procurement: 4,260 MW solar & 3,427 MW wind tied up
- State Collaboration: Encouraging solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear power integration
Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Limited (RUMSL) will supply this ultra-low-cost solar energy, supporting rail operations.
