India, EU Strengthen Green Energy Cooperation, Target FTA by 2025 End
Mar 03, 2025
India and the European Union (EU) have announced a series of initiatives to enhance collaboration on clean energy, technology, and trade, with a goal of concluding a Bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025. The announcement came following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Hyderabad House.
Key Areas of India-EU Green Energy Cooperation
- Green Hydrogen & Offshore Wind: India and the EU will jointly conduct a Green Hydrogen Forum and an Offshore Wind Energy Business Summit to drive investment and innovation in these sectors.
- EV Battery Recycling & Marine Plastic Mitigation: Joint research will focus on battery circularity, flexible and low-cost recycling methods, and technologies to detect, measure, and mitigate marine plastic pollution.
- Waste-to-Hydrogen Conversion: Both sides will develop high-efficiency technologies for converting biogenic waste into hydrogen.
- EV Charging Infrastructure Standards: India and the EU will collaborate on harmonized standards for EV charging stations, including joint research on testing solutions and knowledge-sharing in e-mobility.
- Hydrogen Safety & Wastewater Treatment: Cooperation will extend to hydrogen safety standards, technology market adoption, and wastewater treatment solutions based on previous research.
Investment & Technology Cooperation
Modi emphasized strengthening the investment framework, particularly in Investment Protection and Geographical Indications (GI) agreements. India and the EU also plan to increase collaboration in:
- Semiconductors, AI, High-Performance Computing, and 6G Technologies
- Space Dialogue for deeper cooperation in space research
- India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), which Modi described as a key driver for global commerce and sustainable growth
Strategic & Regional Cooperation
India and the EU reaffirmed their commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. Notably, the EU has joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, and both sides will work on Triangular Development projects in the Indo-Pacific and Africa.
People-to-People & Research Collaboration
India and the EU agreed to expand academia, research, and industry partnerships, leveraging India’s young talent and Europe’s innovation. Modi confirmed that both sides will develop an ambitious roadmap for their partnership beyond 2025, which will be launched at the next India-EU Summit.
With clean energy, digital transformation, and trade at the core of this renewed partnership, India and the EU are set to deepen their cooperation for a sustainable and technologically advanced future.
