Green Shipping: Navigating the Future of Sustainable Maritime Transport

Feb 21, 2025

At the DGS-IME(I) Green Shipping Conclave in Mumbai, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), highlighted the opportunities and challenges of the green transition in the shipping sector. With the maritime industry responsible for nearly 3% of global emissions, decarbonizing this sector is crucial for global climate goals.

Key Pathways for Green Shipping
  • Biofuels: Sustainable biofuels can reduce carbon footprints while utilizing existing infrastructure.
  • Green Ammonia & Low-Carbon Methanol: Alternative fuels that promise zero or near-zero emissions, making shipping more sustainable.
  • Ship Recycling: Ensuring end-of-life vessels are dismantled in an environmentally friendly and safe manner.
  • Energy Efficiency: Technologies such as wind-assisted propulsion, air lubrication, and advanced hull designs can drastically cut fuel consumption.

The shift toward decarbonized shipping is not just a necessity but an opportunity for innovation, investment, and international collaboration. Organizations like GH2 India, Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF-SO), and GIZ India are actively contributing to this transition.

The path ahead for sustainable shipping requires coordinated efforts among governments, industry players, and international bodies to make greener fuels, energy-efficient technologies, and responsible ship recycling the new industry standard.
