Global Wind Energy Capacity Hits 1,136 GW with Record Installations in 2024: GWEC

Apr 28, 2025

The Global Wind Energy Council’s (GWEC) Global Wind Report 2025 reveals that 117 GW of new wind energy capacity was installed worldwide in 2024, pushing the global total to 1,136 GW. Asia Pacific dominated with 75% of the global market, led by China and India. The top five countries—China, the U.S., Germany, India, and Brazil—accounted for 81% of new capacity.

Onshore wind reached a record 109 GW in new installations, surpassing 1,000 GW cumulatively. China alone contributed 70% of global onshore additions. In contrast, installations fell across Europe, Latin America, and North America. Despite U.S. policy support, onshore growth there was the lowest since 2014.

Offshore wind additions fell by 26% YoY to 8 GW, with global offshore capacity reaching 83.2 GW. China again led, contributing half of the offshore additions, while Europe added 2.7 GW and the U.S. commissioned the 132 MW South Fork Wind Farm.

Looking ahead, GWEC expects a record 138 GW of new installations in 2025. From 2025–2030, global wind capacity is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.8%, with China and Europe continuing to dominate. Offshore wind is poised for rapid expansion, quadrupling annual installations by 2030.
