Florida Becomes a Solar Superpower, Surpassing California in Utility-Scale Solar

Mar 15, 2025

Florida has emerged as a solar powerhouse, surpassing California in utility-scale solar additions in 2024 with 3 GW of new capacity, making it second only to Texas. Despite state policies that have removed climate change references, the solar industry in Florida is thriving due to several key factors. Favorable regulations have simplified the permitting process for solar farms, while increasing extreme weather events have heightened the demand for energy resilience. Additionally, federal tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) have made solar more affordable, and strong net metering policies continue to encourage homeowners to adopt rooftop solar.

Since 2019, Florida has ranked No. 2 in residential solar installations, with rooftop solar adoption continuing to rise. Currently, 8% of the state's electricity comes from solar, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing. Florida is truly living up to its "Sunshine State" nickname, leveraging its abundant solar resources to build a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
