European Commission’s GECO 2024 Report Highlights Climate Action Gaps

The European Commission JRC has released the 10th edition of the Global Energy and Climate Outlook (GECO 2024), which assesses the progress of global energy and climate policies. The report finds that the world is not on track to meet climate targets due to persistent implementation and ambition gaps.

With updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due in 2025, the report presents 1.5°C-aligned indicators for 2035 across four key decarbonization strategies: clean electricity generation, electrification & energy efficiency, decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, and scaling negative emissions. These indicators aim to guide global climate negotiations and strengthen policy alignment with net-zero goals.
