Eneco and EP NL to Launch 200 MWh Battery Project at Enecogen Power Plant
Jul 23, 2025
Eneco and EP NL are jointly developing a large-scale battery energy storage system at the Enecogen power plant in Europoort, Netherlands. The 50:50 partnership project will feature a 50 MW battery with a storage capacity of 200 MWh, capable of supplying electricity for four hours. The battery is scheduled to be operational in 2027 and is expected to enhance the flexibility of the Dutch electricity system.
While Enecogen will handle operations and maintenance, trading operations will be managed by both partners. Despite the significance of such projects for the energy transition, battery development in the Netherlands has been slow compared to countries like Germany and Belgium, mainly due to high grid access charges. Although the Enecogen battery benefits from an existing grid connection, costs still hinder the profitability of such projects.
Eneco's COO Karen de Lathouder emphasized the need for policy support, particularly exemptions from net tariffs for batteries, to accelerate deployment. EP NL CEO Martin Bartošovi? highlighted that the collaboration showcases how innovation and partnerships can support a stable and sustainable energy future.
The statement also stresses that short-term flexibility from batteries must be complemented by long-term solutions like controllable power plants, suggesting a capacity mechanism is vital to balance intermittent renewable energy sources.
