Empowering Rural India through Decentralized Green Hydrogen from Biomass

Apr 30, 2025

During the Workshop on the National Green Hydrogen Mission at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi, a key panel discussion focused on "Decentralized Hydrogen Production through Biomass Pathways." Moderated by Dr. Sangita M. Kasture from MNRE and supported by the MSME Business Forum, the session explored how biomass can serve as a clean and inclusive source of hydrogen, especially suited for decentralized and rural applications.

Panelists included Sqn. Ldr. Ankur Naik, Mr. Mateen Abdul, and Dr. Piyali Das. Mr. Naik highlighted the importance of aggregating biomass locally and using decentralized models to boost rural economies. Mr. Abdul stressed that scalable biomass technologies could empower both MSMEs and rural communities. Dr. Das emphasized the gap between lab research and field implementation, calling for pilot-scale demonstrations to prove viability.

In the interactive Q&A session, key concerns such as technology maturity, safety, scalability, certification, and policy challenges were raised. The discussion made it clear that India must foster innovation, encourage partnerships across sectors, and update regulations to become a global leader in decentralized green hydrogen. The session underlined that with the right support, biomass-based hydrogen can drive clean energy access and economic upliftment in rural areas.
