EIL Achieves Key Milestone in PM Urja Ganga Natural Gas Pipeline Project

Jul 21, 2025

Engineers India Limited (EIL) has marked a significant achievement in the execution of the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga pipeline project, a cornerstone initiative by GAIL (India) Limited aimed at expanding natural gas access across underserved regions. This project underpins India’s broader strategy to transition toward a gas-based economy, enhancing energy access while reducing environmental impact.

Spanning approximately 1,030 kilometers, the pipeline comprises multiple segments, including Dobhi–Durgapur, Durgapur–Haldia, and Dhamra–Haldia, with pipe diameters ranging from 12” to 30”. It is designed to supply clean fuel to industries, households, and other end-users, thereby fostering cleaner growth.

EIL, serving as the consultant, successfully commissioned the Dobhi–Durgapur section in 2021 and has now reached advanced stages of completing the Dhamra–Haldia stretch. A major highlight includes the inauguration of the Durgapur–Kolkata section by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, symbolizing the strategic importance of this infrastructure.

The project involved complex engineering feats, including around 130 Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) crossings—notably the 2,800-meter-long Roopnarayan River crossing, executed using the Intersect HDD method. This milestone underscores EIL’s technical prowess and the project's pivotal role in India's energy transition and infrastructure modernization.
