DVC Launches Rs1,500 Crore Power Modernization Project
Mar 17, 2025
The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has launched a Rs1,500 crore initiative to modernize its power distribution network across West Bengal and Jharkhand, ensuring round-the-clock quality power and reducing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, an official said on Sunday.
The modernization project aims to replace the conventional power distribution system with advanced technology-driven solutions, covering DVC’s 24,235 sq. km command area. DVC primarily serves industrial consumers, with minimal supply to retail customers.
Key Features of the Project
- State-of-the-Art Technology Integration
- Implementation of Distribution Management System (DMS) and Outage Management System (OMS).
- Deployment of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Metering Data Management System.
- GIS mapping for real-time monitoring and fiber optic-based metering.
- Introduction of Ring Main Units (RMU) for improved efficiency.
- Advanced Smart Substations and E-Houses
- 12 container-based, unmanned E-houses to be deployed.
- 8 conventional 33/11 KV substations and 4 GIS-based prefab substations planned.
- The first E-house was commissioned in Dhanbad on January 3, 2025.
- Additional E-houses will be installed in BIADA, Deoli, Giridih, Hazaribagh, and Sindri by March 2025.
- Centralized Monitoring and Control
- The new distribution system will be managed through two advanced control centers in Kalyaneshwari (West Bengal) and Koderama (Jharkhand).
- These centers will ensure hot redundancy and operate a 24x7 customer service cell.
- Enhanced Consumer Services
- The system will enable automated connection and disconnection based on billing and payments.
- Consumers will be able to manage their services through a dedicated mobile app, eliminating the need for physical visits.
DVC has partnered with leading industry players, including Tata Consulting Engineers, Siemens Columbia, Siemens India, Transafe, and Techno Electric, to implement this large-scale modernization drive.
“This technological leap marks a significant milestone in DVC’s journey towards modernizing power distribution. By leveraging cutting-edge solutions, we aim to enhance operational efficiency, reduce losses, and provide our consumers with a seamless and transparent experience,” said Arup Sarkar, Member (Finance), DVC.
The modernization project is expected to significantly improve power supply reliability for industries, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen DVC’s position as a leader in the power sector. The initiative aligns with India's broader efforts to upgrade energy infrastructure and promote digital transformation in power distribution.
