DVC and CIL Sign MoU for 2×800 MW Ultra Supercritical Expansion at CTPS, Jharkhand
Apr 26, 2025
In a strategic move to meet the rising power demand in the DVC valley region, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has signed a Non-Binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Coal India Limited (CIL) for the brownfield expansion of the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS) in Jharkhand. The agreement outlines plans to set up 2×800 MW Ultra Supercritical thermal power units, enhancing the region’s base load capacity.
The MoU was signed by Shri Swapnendu Kumar Panda, Member (Technical), DVC, and Shri Debasish Nanda, Director (Business Development), CIL, in the presence of Shri S. Suresh Kumar, IAS, Chairman, DVC, and Shri P.M. Prasad, Chairman, CIL, along with senior officials from both organisations.
Beyond thermal capacity expansion, the MoU also emphasizes collaborative development of renewable energy projects, including those integrated with energy storage solutions, thereby aligning with India’s hybrid energy transition goals. This partnership signifies a balanced approach—meeting immediate energy security needs through supercritical thermal technology, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for long-term decarbonization through renewables.
The adoption of Ultra Supercritical technology ensures higher efficiency and reduced emissions compared to conventional thermal plants, in line with global best practices. As India ramps up its energy infrastructure to support rapid industrialization and electrification, such partnerships between state-run giants like DVC and CIL will play a pivotal role in achieving a reliable, affordable, and cleaner power mix.
