DP Energy Plans 1.4 GW Windy Plains Renewable Energy Park in Queensland

Jul 26, 2025

Irish renewable energy firm DP Energy has announced its latest large-scale project—the Windy Plains Renewable Energy Park, planned near Julia Creek in McKinlay Shire, Queensland, Australia. The proposed development will feature around 197 wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 1,400 MW, supported by battery energy storage systems (BESS) of 500 MW/2,000 MWh. This project is set to significantly support Queensland’s renewable energy targets and Australia’s broader net-zero ambitions.

The site offers multiple advantages: high wind speeds over 8.5 m/s, ample land, minimal nearby dwellings, flat terrain for efficient deployment, and proximity to Powerlink Queensland’s new CopperString transmission line. The project is currently in the feasibility stage, with environmental, technical, and cultural assessments underway before moving to regulatory approval stages.

Hugh Cantwell, Head of Development at DP Energy Australia, emphasized local collaboration, including engagement with communities and First Nations, as key to the project’s success.

Windy Plains adds to DP Energy’s growing Australian portfolio, which includes the approved 430 MW Callide Wind Farm and 320 MW Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park, alongside a 4.5 GW global development pipeline across Ireland, UK, Canada, and Australia.
