Feb 24, 2025

Coal India has signed a non-binding Term Sheet with EDF India, a subsidiary of Électricité de France (EDF), to form a joint venture for developing and operating Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) and hydro projects. This partnership marks a major step in India's clean energy transition, focusing on energy storage solutions to enhance grid stability and renewable integration.

Key Highlights of the Collaboration
  • Joint Venture for PSP & Hydro Projects – Coal India and EDF India will own, operate, and maintain these projects to support India’s energy storage needs.
  • Government Backing – The agreement was signed in the presence of Mohammad Afzal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, and Luc Rémont, Chairman & CEO of EDF, reflecting strong institutional support.
  • Diversification of Coal India's Portfolio – The company is gradually expanding its renewable energy investments, reducing its dependence on coal.
Coal India’s Renewable Push
  • Developing a 1,190 MW solar power plant in Bikaner, Rajasthan, as part of a 2,000 MW solar park in partnership with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RVUNL).
  • Exploring energy storage solutions to complement its growing clean energy portfolio.

This strategic partnership underscores the importance of pumped storage in India's energy transition, ensuring round-the-clock renewable energy availability while strengthening the country's energy security.
