China Leads CO2 Emissions from Energy Sector in 2023
Feb 17, 2025
China remained the world's largest emitter of energy-related carbon dioxide in 2023, contributing 12.6 billion tonnes—31% of global emissions. This surpasses the total emissions of the entire Western Hemisphere and Europe combined. The country’s heavy reliance on coal and oil, coupled with its large population, continues to drive its high emission levels. Despite significant investments in renewable energy, China’s emissions increased by 6% from 2022. The broader Asia-Pacific region also saw a 3.4% rise in emissions, although nations like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan managed to reduce their annual carbon output.
