BPCL and GPS Renewables Launch Joint Venture to Set Up CBG Plants Across Five Indian States

Apr 25, 2025

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) and GPS Renewables have joined forces in a new Joint Venture (JV) to establish 8–10 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants in Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. This partnership is a crucial step in supporting India’s energy transition and BPCL’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions. These states were strategically chosen due to their high agricultural biomass potential and BPCL’s existing city gas distribution presence—minimizing logistical costs and enabling smooth operations.

The JV will focus on converting organic biomass waste into CBG using advanced waste-to-energy technologies. This renewable fuel source can help combat issues like stubble burning, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions while promoting rural economic development. By creating a structured value chain for agri-residue, farmers can benefit from new income opportunities.

This initiative supports key government programs such as GOBARdhan, SATAT, and the Compressed Biogas Blending Obligation (CBO), all aimed at promoting sustainable energy alternatives and clean fuel adoption. It also enhances India’s energy security by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The formal signing of the JV reflects a growing trend of collaboration between public and private players in building innovative, sustainable energy solutions that align with India’s low-carbon and rural development goals.
