BP Exits US Onshore Wind Sector, Sells 1.7 GW Portfolio to LS Power
Jul 24, 2025
BP has announced the sale of its US onshore wind energy business, bp Wind Energy North America Inc., to LS Power, a major infrastructure and energy player. Post-acquisition, the business will become part of LS Power’s portfolio company, Clearlight Energy, boosting its total operational capacity to 4.3 GW. The deal includes 10 operating wind assets across seven US states, with nine managed directly by bp and a total gross capacity of 1.7 GW (1.3 GW net to bp).
The entire bp Wind Energy workforce is expected to transition to LS Power, ensuring operational continuity. The assets are fully grid-connected and currently serve over 15 off-takers through structured contracts.
This divestment aligns with bp’s ongoing strategy to streamline and prioritise high-value low-carbon investments, as part of its broader $20 billion divestment programme. According to bp EVP William Lin, while low-carbon energy remains a key focus, bp believes LS Power is better positioned to scale and optimise these specific wind operations.
LS Power’s CEO Paul Segal emphasized the strategic value of acquiring well-located, contract-backed wind assets that will complement their broader 21 GW energy portfolio and enhance efforts to meet rising US power demand. The deal is expected to close by year-end, pending regulatory approvals.
