BHP and CATL Partner to Explore Battery Tech for Mining Decarbonisation

Jul 16, 2025

BHP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with battery technology leader Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) to collaborate on innovative solutions aimed at reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions from mining operations. The partnership focuses on deploying advanced battery technologies for mining equipment and locomotives, exploring rapid charging infrastructure, and examining energy storage systems and battery recycling options applicable to BHP's global mining activities.

This collaboration aligns with BHP's long-term commitment to achieving net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by calendar year 2050. CATL, known for its cutting-edge advancements in battery technologies and e-mobility solutions, offers significant potential to accelerate decarbonisation across the mining sector.

Both companies will leverage their respective expertise to identify viable electrification pathways and develop next-generation energy solutions for hard-to-abate industrial applications. The partnership reflects the broader industry trend of integrating energy-efficient technologies into traditionally carbon-intensive sectors like mining, supporting a more sustainable energy transition.
