Argentina Launches Global Tender for 500MW BESS Projects in Buenos Aires

Feb 26, 2025

Argentina's Energy Secretariat has announced a global tender for 500MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in critical nodes across the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA). The project, valued at $500 million, is part of an energy contingency plan introduced in October 2024 to improve power reliability and efficiency.

Key Highlights:
  • Project Scope: Deployment of BESS at strategic locations to enhance grid stability and provide backup power during peak demand.
  • Execution Timeline: 12 to 18 months.
  • Investment Requirement: $10,000/MW bank guarantee per bid.
  • Energy Offtake & Management: Contracts to be signed with Edenor & Edesur, with CAMMESA as the guarantor.
  • Strategic Importance: AMBA consumes 40% of Argentina’s electricity, making grid stability a top priority.

Argentina, part of the Lithium Triangle (Chile, Bolivia, Argentina), holds over 50% of the world's lithium resources. India's Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) has partnered with Catamarca Minera Y Energetica Sociedad Del Estado to explore and develop five lithium brine blocks, boosting India's role in global battery supply chains.

The BESS initiative marks Argentina's first large-scale energy storage adoption, aiming to reduce reliance on emergency power sources and optimize grid performance. Provincial governments have been encouraged to adopt similar models to strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
