Ahmedabad Leads with Solar-Powered EV Charging for Public Transport
Jul 21, 2025
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a major green mobility initiative by integrating rooftop solar panels with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for public buses. In the first phase, five key locations—Ranip, Naranpura, Vastral, Jamalpur, and Vadaj—will host solar EV charging hubs to power approximately 200 electric BRTS and AMTS buses. This initiative is being led by AMC’s Air Quality Management Cell, as part of broader efforts to enhance urban air quality.
The project is poised to expand to over 34 solar-powered charging stations across the city. It complements AMC's existing sustainability initiatives, such as the creation of urban forests, installation of CNG-based crematoriums, and implementation of smart traffic systems.
AMC has a history of renewable energy adoption. In February 2024, it installed solar panels at three water treatment plants, saving up to 2 million units of electricity annually. By September 2024, the city commissioned a 30 MW solar park in Sabarkantha, expected to save Rs20.6 crore per year and cut CO2 emissions by 37,704 tonnes. Additionally, wind energy projects in Kutch have led to nearly Rs200 crore in savings.
This initiative establishes Ahmedabad as a leader in sustainable urban transport, offering a replicable model for integrating renewables with EV infrastructure.
