Uttar Pradesh Rises as a Rooftop Solar Leader Despite Key Hurdles
Apr 09, 2025
Uttar Pradesh is becoming one of India's leading states for rooftop solar adoption. Thanks to strong sunlight, supportive government programs like PM Surya Ghar, and increased public awareness, rooftop solar installations—especially in the residential sector—are booming. In 2024, 88.2% of the state's new rooftop solar capacity came from homes. The government is also installing solar on government buildings and has plans to turn 16 cities into “Solar Cities,” with Ayodhya leading the way.
Installers and solar companies are optimistic about future growth, crediting national programs like the National Solar Mission and PM-KUSUM for supporting expansion across various sectors, including agriculture. Public interest is growing due to environmental awareness, cost savings, and easy loan availability. Many now see solar as a smart long-term investment.
However, challenges remain. Consumers report delays in loan processing, net metering, and billing issues. The government’s online portal also faces technical glitches. Some installers even use substandard equipment to offer cheaper prices, which affects system performance. Despite these issues, better policy enforcement, quick grievance redressal, and active DISCOM engagement are improving the landscape.
With robust policy support and rising demand, Uttar Pradesh is well-positioned to lead India’s solar energy transition, both in rooftop and open access segments.
