India’s Energy Roadmap to 2047: A Vision for Net Zero with IESS v3.0

Apr 16, 2025

India Energy Security Scenarios (IESS) 2047 v3.0 is an advanced energy modeling tool created by NITI Aayog and IIT Bombay to help India plan its journey towards energy security and Net Zero emissions. This tool allows users—policymakers, planners, and investors—to build and compare different future energy scenarios based on changes in GDP growth, urbanization, energy efficiency, and technology use like electric vehicles, hydrogen, and carbon capture.

Each sector—like transport, industry, and agriculture—is modeled through “levers” that range from pessimistic (no major change) to heroic (bold transitions). These help users understand the impact of choices across both demand (like buildings and transport) and supply (like renewables and fossil fuels).

A real-world example is India’s ethanol blending program, which increased from 1.5% in 2014 to 15% in 2024. This success aligns with IESS projections. If India achieves the ambitious 20% blending target by 2024 and sustains it, it could cut oil imports by $4 billion annually while boosting farmer income and reducing emissions.

IESS v3.0 also integrates key national policies like the Green Hydrogen Mission and FAME, and includes tools to simulate emissions, costs, and land/water use. It's more than just a model—it's a powerful planning platform for a low-carbon, self-reliant India.
