Attero and NISE Partner to Pioneer Solar Panel Recycling in India
Apr 17, 2025
India’s solar waste management took a major step forward as Attero, a leading e-waste and lithium-ion battery recycler, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) to collaborate on developing solar panel recycling technologies. The partnership aims to tackle the rising challenge of end-of-life solar panels, with projections estimating India could generate up to 600 kilotons of PV waste by 2030 and 19,000 kilotons by 2050.
NISE, an autonomous body under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), will support Attero by providing access to its expertise and used solar panels for pilot testing. Both organizations plan to set up a dedicated test and R&D facility on the NISE campus for solar and lithium-ion battery recycling.
The partnership will also co-author technical reports and policy recommendations to guide the development of national and global recycling standards. Attero, known for recovering 22+ elements at 98% recovery and 99.9% purity, aims to build scalable, eco-friendly solutions. CEO Nitin Gupta emphasized the urgent need for recycling infrastructure as India’s solar capacity—already at 100.33 GW—continues to surge through initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.
